Outta the House
Morning in the park, dew on my feet,
trees whisper softly as songbirds repeat.
By noon I climb where the air is thin,
the view opens wide, as I take it all in.
Afternoon wind lifts my kite to the sky,
a string full of dreams pulling to fly.
At dusk on the beach, waves smooth every doubt,
the tide floats my worries … so quietly out.
In each open moment, I so clearly see –
the awesome, incredible place to be …
… is “Outta the House!”
Our Story
I was born in central Oklahoma and raised in west Texas and southwest Kansas, but some of my happiest childhood memories were made in western Montana, where my mother grew up in the foothills of the Rockies.
Summers in west Texas and southwest Kansas were hot by nature, so family vacations always began after dark. Mom and Dad would drive through the night, and somehow, we magically awoke in Colorado — greeted by the scent of sagebrush and pine, and the sight of pronghorn antelope moving across the open landscape. Waking up in Colorado also meant Yellowstone National Park was only a day away, and the anticipation we had carried for weeks suddenly burst into pure excitement about what might be waiting around the next bend.
It’s no wonder I’ve often felt like a “mountain kid” with the misfortune to be born and raised in the “flatlands.” Don’t get me wrong — west Texas has its own rugged beauty of sandhills, mesquite, and prickly pear, while Kansas offers endless rolling waves of summer wheat beneath wide-open skies. I simply had to learn to appreciate those landscapes on their own terms without comparing them to the grandeur of the Rocky Mountains.
Over the years, that love of the outdoors followed me everywhere: backpacking through Colorado’s mountains, tent camping in Oklahoma, Wyoming, and British Columbia, motorcycling across 32 states and five Canadian provinces, floating the Yellowstone River, walking Florida’s sandy beaches, picnicking in a city park, flying a kite, or simply relaxing on the patio.
No matter the place or the adventure, they all have one thing in common:
